WOOO HOOOO! Look what I "won" on EBAY
I should finish the story on the oliera that I asked for Christmas. It arrived, with the damage that the seller had told me of. The lid was not removable. I removed it with force and tore the lid from the neck that slides inside the "can" up at the top. I sent the oliera home with my Dad when he visited for Christmas. He braised (welded) the lid back to the neck, using food safe solder, and made it fit perfectly.
The inside of the oliera had a patina that suggested to me a lead based solder, galvanize, or something not food grade. I decided to whip out the food saver and create a food safe liner for the can. It took several tries but i did finally seal a plastic glove to fit on the inside. The breakthrough came when I grabbed one of the kids hospital style bendey straws. It made a perfect transition from the pouring spout to the base of the can.
In the last picture you can see the end of the bendey straw near the end of the spout.
If anyone else needs out patient surgery on their oliera, maybe we can help.
