Are you from central Ohio? Then speak up here.
« on: April 14, 2012, 12:13:05 PM »
I've noticed a couple new users lately whose profiles indicate that they live in Columbus or central Ohio. That means there are at least 4 or 5 central Ohioans hanging around here, and I think we should start a little network, partly in an effort to split up cases of desirable ingredients, or maybe even schedule events to share our pizza-making knowledge with each other. And other stuff like that.

Who's in?

I'm in.

So here's a little introduction: I'm Ryan and I live in southwest Franklin County (between Grove City and London). Before I started participating on these boards, my standard pizza was kind of a New York style. However, since I began participating here, my focus has been mainly on cloning Tommy's pizza, and I've come very close. (In fact, I think I've made a lot of Tommy's-style pizzas that are much better than Tommy's.) Also, having worked at Donatos, I've been familiar with most of their procedures for a long time. However, a lot of Donatos' most important secrets are kept in their commissary (where I've never been), but some research from Peter (Pete-zza) helped me create a near-perfect clone of Donatos, in one try (which I documented on a Donatos thread somewhere). I've also made some Malnati's-style deep dish pizzas, which were also very good.

Hi Ryan, I'm In Dublin. I don't think I need to do the split up cases thing though as my pizza making has become a little bit sparatic, and I usually get topping ingredients as I need them. My flour is stored in a sealable bin in my basement that I think would stay relatively fresh for years.

I'll use 50 lbs before the year's up. I never really thought about it going bad. It's in a cool dry place, and the bin I use has a foam gasket that locks shut so it's pretty protected.

I'm from Columbus! We do a monthly pizza outing around the franklin county area to get to know what pizza places are out there and what they're up to. We had one last night and AimlessRyan came. It was interesting to talk with him, as I don't know any pizza obsessives IRL. The pizza outings fall on the wednesday closest to the middle of the month. There may be some variation, but that's the just of it. If anyone would be interested in hopping on board the pizza train, speak up. And we're always taking suggestions for pizza places in the area to check out, as well!

Cheers, Central Ohio Pizza Folk!

I move that the attendees of these monthly outings be named, collectively, the Columbus Pizza Dorks Club (or Columbus Pizza Dorks, for short). Or something like that.

I don't know if I wanna claim dorkdom. I got a pizza rep to uphold here, Ryan. A self-proclaiming pizza dork might be counter-productive for GoreMade Pizza's image. Who wants a dork making pizza at their next event?

Hey Nick, maybe you should reveal the details of the next pizza geek outing. Perhaps we can get Jay to show up.

Wednesday, August 15th @ 7:30, we're gonna check out a new coal fired pizza place that just opened up a couple days ago in worthington. http://nataliescoalfiredpizza.com/

Never had coal fired pizza (tried marco's coal fired pizza in denver, but it was wood fired!?), and they say they're the only coal fired pizza place in ohio, so i'm interested in seeing what it's all about!

If you're in the columbus/worthington area and wanna go, let me know you're coming so we can get the right number for the reservation.

W00T!

I think I'm gonna be at or near Cedar Point that day (F*%K YEAH!!!), so I probably won't be able to make it to this one. Thanks for giving plenty of notice, though. I'll let you know if my plans change.

Next pizza Wednesday, on September 19th, we'll be headed out to Slice of Columbus.
https://giving.nationwidechildrens.org/Page.aspx?pid=282

For those who don't know, Slice of Columbus is put on to as a benefit to Nationwide Children's Hospital. They get all the chain pizza places together and it's basically a smorgasbord of gluttonous pizza consumption. For the price of admission ($12 early-bird special or $15 day of) you get to eat your own weight in pizza (last year they also had a free ice cream booth, too. There's also sodas for sale... and maybe alcohol for sale, but the line is way long). They allow you to vote for your favorite, and they also have a panel of judges as well.

This was actually the event that got us going on our monthly pizza Wednesdays. This one marking our 2nd anniversary of pizza wednesdays! If you've been wanting to check out a pizza wednesday, this is the one, simply for volume/variety to cost ratio. $12 gets you pizza from all over Columbus. Come check it out, but be ye warned... it's about as gluttonous as it gets!

Happy Birthday Pizza Wednesday!

I was gonna say... It's pretty convenient that this worked out to be on a Wednesday in the middle of the month, just how you always plan things.
