Got my "ebay won" Hobart mixer today. Still waiting for the bowl. My wife thinks it is the ugliest looking thing ever. She now wishes I would have gotten a nice black Kitchen Aid

. I won it for 255 and am now waiting for the bowl. Seems to work fine, although I'm still waiting for my King Arthur flour. Anyone know if you have to do things to it like oil it or something... well , off to do more research.

Change wifes mind on color to Cobalt

Motor sounds like the car I owned as a teenager

Dough hook stopping dough to stiff for KitchenAid

KitchenAid has factory motor problems

Dough finished though

KitchenAid back in box

Clone of KitchAid to return next week to make more ZZA

Should have bought the Pro Series......

For some reason the industrie just doesn't make things as good as they used to or are not allowed to. I think the original Kitchen Aids (or any other brand mixer as well) sold 20 or 30 years were better and more unbreakable.

I heard or read somewhere that it has something to do with some saftey regulations for household appliances. If the kids (or an Adult) gets a hand or fingers in the apparatus.

The torque is limited or regulated by safety laws and with all the lawsuits over the last 20 or 30 years the companies try to stay on the safe side. It's kind of sad, everyone knows that when something is turned on you shouldn't be putting your fingers in the unsafe area.

Has anyone else heard of that as well.

We have an old hand mixer ( just 150 watts), an ugly orange colored bugger, but it mixes those heavy doughs with no problem. Made sometime in the 70's .

There you go it is 10 years old, maybe thats why it works so well.

New KitchenAid out of box and on counter, but got wrapped up with kiddies today so I never even turned it on. If it does anything even remotely close to the last one I will be calling KitchenAid directely.

I think I will talk softly to it before turning it on, could be a TLC thing.
My father-in-law thought it quite funny that the KitchenAid was my toy and not my wifes.

Oh man, I have an old SouthBend lathe in my shop that looks very similar to that mixer... Basically, I'm loving it...

Hmmm. I wonder if I can make a jig to mix dough for it...

Made my first batch of dough with my used Hobart mixer!

All I can say is for anyone looking to get a mixer to make dough, I highly recommend going to ebay and getting a used Hobart N-50 one. I made a batch in my 5 qt. bowl using about 2.5 lbs of flour with no slow down whatsover, I probably could of used all 5lbs of flour if my bowl was big enough. The only thing is if you have a wife she'll probably make you put it away every time your done because its so ugly. Wouldn't mind so much but it weighs like 50 pounds!

Is the dough improved by using such a mixer?

Or is it just the advantage of being able to make a larger batch without the machine smoking or bogging down.

Hmmm... A dough hook on a Bridgeport mill hmmmm I'm thinking thinking.

I think it just makes it easier because you'll get the dough kneaded faster. My batch was done in like 5 minutes with no problems. I used 2.5 lbs of flour. It took me longer on figuring out how to take it out when it was done.

I first purchased a KA 6 qt and killed it in a week after trying to make bagel dough. I called KA and told the KA rep what I was trying to do and was told that there was no way to mix such a stiff dough for over 10 min. I replied that it didn't say anything about that in the manual, but was assured by the rep and his supervisor who called back later, that this kind of use (mixing high gluten doughs) would kill KA mixers. I returned the KA and saw an ad in The Baker's Catalog for the 1000 watt Viking. I called Viking and told them how I planned to use the mixer. I was told that there would not be a problem and there hasn't been one yet after many batches of pizza and bagel dough. The 1000 watt Viking was about $500. I did look on Ebay for a Hobart n50 but even the used ones were all over $1K. Congrats to the fellow who paid $250 for his. Also the old KAs were made by Hobart and are much better than the new ones made since Hobart sold off the KA label.
