First off I've never been to Jersey or even north of Baltimore, so I cannot compare this to a sausage roll, but it looked like an interesting combination.
I tried this pie with a few changes, I added my base sauce which is a Papa John's clone (sweet), carmelized onions instead of oven roasted, and fresh roasted red peppers. It turned out great, overall it was a wee bit too sweet for my tastes, as the onion, sauce and sausage all were sweet. But overall I cannot wait to make it again. Next time I will either omit the sauce all together (maybe as a side to dip) or go with a mild or hot italian sausage to add some contrast to the sweetness.
