I've been using glazed tiles from Home Depo and Menards,  I've actually done pottery before in school and my take is that if the tiles are actually glazed that the glazing temperature is so hot that there shouldn't be any thing toxic that comes of the stones but I've read some sources that seem to worry about toxins.

My aunt had a pizza stone from pampered chef that shattered.  By looking at it, it was a bisque fired slightly convex piece of clay... Cost too much for what it was!

My current tile is I think about 1/4", porcelain tile the cheapest 12" square they had and its broken in half but it works great and the crust doesn't fall through the cracks or even get an impression from it.

Porcelain should fire at 1200 degrees fahrenheit, and glazing temperatures should be hot enough to melt glass.

I'm going to buy small 6" square terra cotta tiles that look like they have a clear glaze on them and turn them upside down for my next stone experiment.

I have access to a kiln also, so I could roll out a slab andy thickness and make a pizza stone and slip it in...

Glazed tile is a bad idea as many have toxic pigments, heavy metals & other nasty stuff. Are you certain that the glazed tile you are looking at doesn't? There are some brands of tiles and pizza stones that are expensive. But in the places I've lived you can usually find 12" square unglazed tile for just a few dollars. At that price, why risk your health?

Thanks,  I've read that before but no source has told me exactly what the risks are.

If a tile is actually heat fused glazed, at a high temperature like 2000 degrees I don't think my oven will get hot enough to evaporate any of it...

Are you sure that the people who say that don't work for the pizza stone business?

 Huh???

Glazed tile sometimes contains cadmium, lead & other things you shouldn't be eating. Your tile may never chip, leach or sublimate any of these things. But with unglazed tile at $2.25, I still don't see the point in taking a risk. Lead for instance melts at 327°C, tiles sometimes chip & they aren't usually glazed on all sides. So it's not inconceivable that it could happen.

My local tile shop GAVE ME a terracotta unglazed tile 300x300mm and the thickest available. Works too good!
