The frankenwebber. That's great.

It looks like he started with a thin baking stone with a very low ceiling (basically a pizza broiler), but then graduated up to firebrick with a taller dome with the bride of frankenwebber. With his mobility needs, it's got to be tough, but there's got to be a way to bump up the hearth heat just one more notch.

I give him massive props for what he has achieved, though.

This is probably a stupid question.

I have no interest in super-high-heat pizza, but for the heck of it, I just Googled "propane kiln," and I see sites claiming you can get 1400 degrees for just a few bucks. Is there a reason this won't work for pizza? I also see used pottery kilns (electric) on Craigslist for $150-$300.

I just found a 110-volt 1680-watt kiln for $300, and it loads from the side. What is the reason these things won't work?

Could be the heat distribution. Have any links you can post? I'd be all for buying a cheap pottery kiln and trying to make pizza in it.

I don't think so. I started with a full tank and after two separate firings of two pizzas each, the tank still feels pretty full. Once it gets hot I can crank the gas down a good bit and the wood fire maintains the heat on the top pretty well. There are fire brick "splits" fastened to the underside of the dome. It should get even better when I'm not cooking in 30 degree weather and I get the perlite cladding on the top and sides. Another cool thing is where the wood sits, there is no fire brick. It's just open grill where enough heat comes up that the wood self-ignites!

at first i was a little phased about using wood, and what a hassle i thought that would be, (hence, i was leaning more towards the LBE), but now that i think about it... if you want to go all the way possible - (that is without WFO) then this is the closest you can go

i just have some questions about building it.
how did you go about doing it? did you have plans?

how did you shape the wire frame?
is the wood/fire bricks sitting on the metal grate?

also - i had another idea -

why not just use a regular bbq grill (i like natural gas) and crank it up to make, and stick some wood at one end of it, and cut a hole at the opposite end, and bend the metal upwards (so it makes a roof)

now you dont have to do too much modding - you can just crank your regular grill to max temp, and when it reaches around 540 degrees the wood will instuntaneosly combust, thereby raising the temp even further - and theres a window for airflow

with this idea you can prolly get around 800 degrees at least
