Craig,

It's the part where you have to lift the giant cast iron pot of glowing coals using your forearms, right?
I'd rather eat one good meal a day than 3 squares of garbage.

Maybe you are also right that the recent contentiousness among some of the members has increased the post count. Unfortunately, there is no way to go back to a high volume day, like the 400+ day, to examine the posts more closely to see what caused the big jump in volume.

Peter, I took a look at my own posts for that day, and, for what it's worth, it seemed to be an especially non confrontational day.  I get the feeling that the brainteaser thread played a big role in the post count boost.  The brainteaser thread post frequency felt a bit more like an IRC channel than a discussion forum.

I know AOTBE. It's not too often that I come across a word I don't know. I enjoy it when I do.

I have been part of several Internet forums, including as a moderator on a few, and this is by far the most civil one.

I'll second that. There are some things written here that I shake my head at from time to time, and I've written a few things I wish I could take back. Yes, we could and should be better, notwithstanding, it's a pretty friendly and helpful place overall.

Compare pizzamaking.com to Slice recently. I don't think we will ever see things here like invoking Hitler, gratuitous profanity, calling Christians "retarded," etc.

Regrettably, over the years we have had to quickly delete awful things and ban vile people. Comes with the territory.

Steve's vocabulary tests were a breeze compared to the physical endurance phase of the moderator qualification regimen.

Speaking of endurance, next Thursday, at 8:53:51 PM, I will have been on this forum for 8 years. During those years, I do not recall ever missing a single day on this forum and performing my Moderator duties. In that period, there were births, deaths, weddings, funerals, holidays, vacations, family gatherings, and business trips that took me all around the country and even outside the country, yet I always managed to find an Internet connection.

That's amazing Peter. To say that you are devoted would be a huge understatement. Your contributions go way beyond moderator duties too.

Don,

I also went almost 30 years without missing a single day of work because of illness. I think I have mutated genes, like the Ashkenazi Jews :-D.

I know absolutely zip, nada, less than zero about face book, twitter,or any of that social media or whatever they call that stuff. But I know one when I see one. Over "there", it seems to strike me that there is no real continuum of thought (or responsibility)...so you end up with a lot of (but not all)  "posers" trying to interject their one second sound bite of fame. And that sort of competition usually dives into the gutter real fast....

for those wondering what...

Today, Ashkenazi Jews constitute the largest group among Jews,[7] and among Israeli Jews as well. They have played a prominent role in the economy, media, and politics of Israel since its founding. During the first decades of Israel as a state, strong cultural conflict occurred between Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews (mainly east European Ashkenazim). The roots of this conflict, which still exists to a much smaller extent in present day Israeli society, are chiefly attributed to the concept of the "melting pot".

Basically, an insular community and culture, that resists assimilation.  If there is some benefit to the gene pool other than that, it's news.

Unfortunately, the most prevalent Askenazi mutations carry higher vulnerabilities to certain cancers.
