the URBB (ugly rusty black barrel ) thread now with pics!
« on: September 24, 2010, 09:37:50 PM »
got bored and finally got around to making my URBB i talked about doing so with the deep fryer base i found at the scrapyard.   burner and venturi is perfect.  did a few test runs and it appears there isn't any issues with line clogging or a cracked burner so i started the fabwork.

took a 30gal drysoak drum (the kind they have at gas stations with the spill kit soak stuff) and cut it i believe 10" from the top with my nibbler. drilled i think 15 holes 1" down after welding on a 1/2" slightly splayed out lip to the cut so it has a tapered seal when i close the lid.  welded a weld hinge 1/8" thick 1/4" pin 1.5" wide to the back and notched the front to accept a HD 3/8" nut welded to a washer half welded to the lid (used to be the bottom).   ran carriage bolts through the holes and nutted them to make a grate holder for the grate i cut out of expanded steel.   mocked it up in the driveway and cooked a hotdog in about 5-6 mins with the regulator turned up almost exactly 1/4 of the way from off.  before the hotdog i ran it 3/4 wide open to burn off any residue and paint that was on the outside/inside, i had the entire thing smoking the driveway from just the paint.  easily hit the 1000f mark.  drum is 19" wide if i remember correctly, perfect now that i can't fit my 18" screen in my home oven!

will post pictures tomorrow, i'm building this for a WFO and i still need to add vents and a more proper base and a firebox with a baffle down below, but i couldn't resist taking the new toy for a rip

it's off an on rain since last night but hopefully it will stop for long enough that i can get a picture

i still need to build some more for it, but the heat retention i had last night was insane.  i shut it off after 'hotdog cooking temps' and opened it 10mins after and i still had heat rolling out into my face.  i really need to come up with some ingenious way to open this that doesnt require hands

jet

i am going to do a cantilevered lift more than likely, sort of like a step trashcan only on the outside to keep it away from direct heat.

right now it opens 180 which is twice what i want.  it's going to be a dual non-pizza grill/pizza grill and the massive headspace is to allow for collapsing grill racks like most grills now do.

ive got the oven 90% complete.   went for a 3/4" pipe handle, cut a hole for a wood feed, added an old f150 air cleaner lid for a top 'stone' and cut a hole in the middle about 2 3/4", added a vertical baffle between the hole and the exhaust stack on the top.   been using it for a WFG (wood fired grill) lately and i have fantastic results.  can't wait to get it back on my property (its at my friends right now) and fire it up with a pizza stone

got it back at my place.  i used the drum lid and welded some legs to it (think of lunar landers from apollo) with 3/8" round stock and used slightly dished axle washers as the lander feet.   base is about 26" in circle at the feet, and 22 at the drum.   also put a latch on the lid so i can move it while it's baking if i have to.

120 + 120 + 120 = 360.  neither are 128 or 512.  what the f..k.

it's ugly as hell and takes about an hours worth of fire to get good coals, but once it's coaled up i have ZERO problem with getting the temps way up there.

my pictures are resized and re-evaluated in photoshop before i upload.  they are all under 120k and the forum STILL tells me they aren't 128k
