got bored and finally got around to making my URBB i talked about doing so with the deep fryer base i found at the scrapyard. burner and venturi is perfect. did a few test runs and it appears there isn't any issues with line clogging or a cracked burner so i started the fabwork.
took a 30gal drysoak drum (the kind they have at gas stations with the spill kit soak stuff) and cut it i believe 10" from the top with my nibbler. drilled i think 15 holes 1" down after welding on a 1/2" slightly splayed out lip to the cut so it has a tapered seal when i close the lid. welded a weld hinge 1/8" thick 1/4" pin 1.5" wide to the back and notched the front to accept a HD 3/8" nut welded to a washer half welded to the lid (used to be the bottom). ran carriage bolts through the holes and nutted them to make a grate holder for the grate i cut out of expanded steel. mocked it up in the driveway and cooked a hotdog in about 5-6 mins with the regulator turned up almost exactly 1/4 of the way from off. before the hotdog i ran it 3/4 wide open to burn off any residue and paint that was on the outside/inside, i had the entire thing smoking the driveway from just the paint. easily hit the 1000ºf mark. drum is 19" wide if i remember correctly, perfect now that i can't fit my 18" screen in my home oven!
will post pictures tomorrow, i'm building this for a WFO and i still need to add vents and a more proper base and a firebox with a baffle down below, but i couldn't resist taking the new toy for a rip
