We at THE NEW YORK BAKERS believe that what starts out free ought to

Great find MC.  I'd be interested in trying out the SF starter.   I have so many that I don't even use though, so it might be good for just hanging on to.

thanks Catch is you have to order something else to get the free starters  ;) anyway I  ordered a few starters and some cake yeast which I have wanting to try.  $9.00 shipping from NY to NJ is a touch high for a 1 pound package. Ah what the hell its retail therapy ! Looking forward to trying  both the cake yeast and the starters. Back to the threads and thanks in advance for the help with getting the staters going.

I sent them an e-mail saying I was interested in their NYB SoCal Sourdough Starter and gave them my name and address. I guess I'll see what happens... I'll keep you posted if I get a reply. After all, they do say free starter.

From their website

"If you'd like some of our free starter, or if you'd like to share some starters of
your own, email us and tell us which ones you'd like and where to send them.
If you're placing an order and would like us to include some starter, click on
the Add to Cart button."

I haven't received anything not even a e-mail from them. But it's only been two weeks.

My cake yeast and 2 starters came last week. Will activate in a few weeks when I can focus on them. Too much going on now!

Did anybody get any FREE without placing an order? I recently got the Carl Griffith starter from somewhere else but think it's what NYB is listing as the Wagon Train starter. I was thinking of asking NYB for the SF starter, curious to see if anybody was successful getting it from NYB since using the add to cart button takes it to your paypal account but gets an error message because it is "zero" (dollars I assume.) Wonder if this was implemented by NYB to cut down on fullfilling to those without ordering anything else.

Any update on this? Anyone?

This has to be a scam or marketing gimmick. I can't imagine someone would continue to do this for free without even covering their shipping or time costs. It doesn't even state "limited time only".

That aside, how are the starters?

Carls sourdough starter aka Oregon Trail 1847 (I believe) is awesome starter. I have OT1847, SDI San Fransisco, SDI Christy New Zealand Rye and SDI South African Whole Wheat. I use the OT1847 almost exclusively. It is a wonderful thing.

I just received my 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter from Carl's Friends -- it took less than three (3) weeks for it to arrive.
It was completely free - all I had to do was enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.

I sent away for a Carl's starter a few months ago, and it's been sitting (still dry) in my desk drawer ever since.  This thread kicked me in the butt so I started him last night and fed again this morning, and he's already looking fairly perky.  I've been using a KA starter that I converted to WWW for a couple years now, so it will be interesting to see the differences between them.   I was thinking about ordering an Ischia but thought I'd revive Carl first and see how he works.  Fun!

Oh yeah, you know it's called Carl Jr.  My original starter is named Jesus because it multiplies my loaves  ;D

[I hope I do not offend anyone with that!]
