How about hitting Deninos in Staten Island and Johnny's in Mt. Vernon, NY.  Since your already in the area both of these are worth the trip.

Joiseystud....I agree with you here.....although Staten Island and points northward may take too much time to get too?

If not, definitely hit Denino's on Staten Island. And if you are on Staten Island, you cannot leave without some Joe & Pat's pizza!

If you're going to Johnny's in Mt Vernon, Louie & Ernies in the Bronx may be a good tie in to do on the same day?

Thanks for the Community Walk map. It wouldn't let me add, so I made my own. I'll check yours out again. I would've never known something existed like that! I was going to map things out old school style.

I've now got a subway app on my Droid. Have to poke around more, because I'd love to get one that was more like mapquest. Punch in where you are and where you want to go and bam- it gives you the best subway line to take. Maybe I'm making it a little more complicated than it needs to be.

Definitely have thought about Johnny's (based on solely Varasano's high marks, I suppose) and Denino's looks great. Some of these places, like Patsy's are just so far from everything else.

Glad everyone's so pumped about this! Guess that's why we're on a pizza blog/forum.......

If you use the subway on weekends check for service changes explained online or by posters in the station.
The MTA often reroutes trains for construction or maintenance on weekends and late nights. Keeps the tourists on their toes.

Ok, it's getting down to the wire and I'm starting to finalize/revise/change our itinerary. These are some places that are going to sub-in for others- and to get a Five Burroughs representation of New York pizza, I'm really considering. I've axed a few Neapolitan places, in favor of more quintessential (I know, not necessarily better) places that are classic New York style. So, some of the individual, Naples-style pies that do not come served in whole pies, consisting of slices are, well, out for this trip.  Please chime in if you feel these are out of line for a "definitve" NY style pizza education!

1.New Park(Howard Beach)

2.Louie and Ernie's

3.Denino's (some say this is the only truly great pie on Staten Island, while others insist Joe and Pat's and Nunzio's are primo too. It would sure make the trip worth it if there was more than one "must")

4.Sac's Place (already recommended by Pizza Blogger)

*Would love to hit Johnny's in Mt Vernon, but just too far out of the way. Looks delicious!


Many of you have already said these are musts. I've not heard much talk on this forum about New Park, but some say it's at the top. So, if I hit these, I potentially don't hit Motorino, Roberta's, Keste, and Luzzo's.

I've eaten at Louie & Earnies in the Bronx more times than I want to count. I use to work close by so it was always a go to place. I never got tired of it and you won't be disappointed. One of my favorites for a NY slice.

Thats interesting to me.   At one point I was all about luzzos, but lately there have been so many good pizzas in NYC.   Im just wondering if it was recently or a few years ago that you decided Luzzos was the place.   The reason I ask is that I know they have changed some things with the dough in the last two years or so.    I do agree that its awesome.

It's been a little less than two years since I was there.

The margherita (buffalo) I had the last time I was there was the best pie I have ever eaten by a BIG margin.

With few exceptions, my friends in NY do not share the enthusiasm of some on this board for many of the newer places in NYC. I'm going up in early June with the family for a few days to try out the new places and see if I have exaggerated memories of the others.

New Park in Howard Beach is one of Paulie Gee's favorite places for a slice.

If you make a trip to Staten Island, why not visit both Deninos and Joe & Pat's?

Sounds like as good a trip as any. You can never cover all that makes up the NYC pizza scene in a couple of days.

Joe & Pat's is pretty darn good...my favorite that I've tried so far on Staten Island.

The Chesse I think is Chucks of Grade WM chesse
The pie is the bestttttt and I have tasted MOST NYC pizza
but the prices is kinda high,,,, but I do buy a Few pies when I am in the area.....JT
