infrared accuracy

I have been told that infrared themometers do not give accurate readings when used on brick.  You need to buy an 'adjustable' thermometer to get a true reading on brick.  To get an accurate reading you need to get the oven temperature by a mechanical thermometer, and then adjust your infrared to match.  Does anyone know more about this?

I have compared the deck temp of my brick oven using a Cooper IR 411 and calibrated thermocouples. No more than 5-10 degrees difference. That's plenty accurate for my purposes.
