Wood sizing

Hi,

I am going to order my first pile of wood soon.  Some of the places say that they will custom cut the wood.  What size should I be asking for?  I have no knowledge of this, so I need a little help.   I will have a 40 inch wood fired oven.

I'd be curious to know what the best size of wood is as well.   When I chop wood I separate them into 3 piles small, med, and large.

small: 1/2 to 1/4 the size of the medium pieces.  these are used on top of the kindling to get the fire going.
Medium pieces:  About the size of my forearm.  These are to refresh the fire once I start cooking.
Large pieces:  a split 6-8" piece.  These are for getting the oven upto temps and creating coals.   I dump these on once I get the fire going and let them burn down to coals.  That's about when the oven is ready to go.

Kindling:  I use chips that are created in the process of chopping. 

I would think medium pieces about 3" x 16" are ideal.

i usually ask for 18" x 3-4" split.  i don't like limbs that aren't split even if they are that size. my oven is the same size as yours.  most important part of the wood deal is that it needs to be dry, dry, dry.

I agree with the 3-4" size and also think a minimum of 18 long prefer 22". the last batch I got is great (and free )but a touch short maybe 16" for the 40" oven I now have I can make it  work for the price no worries.
