Traveling to Austin...as a pizza freak, this thread was a savoir.  Just had Home Slice.  Speechless.  Epic.  True NY.  Pristine...beautiful, just flat out impressive.  Ordered the Pep mush (they call her #5) with extra sauce, being a sauce guy.  More critique to come later in the week when we head home and try a few more stops...but for now, suffice it to say, if you love pizza, and you are within 300 miles of this place - visit.  Waited an hour to get a seat at peak lunch on a Saturday...more than worth it!  thanks guys.

Back from my mid-winter Texas trip.  Friends from the area (who are not pizza freaks by any means) steered me towards a small pizzeria near our hotel on the south side of Austin.  It was called Classic Pizza.  Good crust, very poor, acidic, pasty sauce, better than average cheese.  A 7.5 out of 10 for me, which is a pretty dang respectable score (my scale isn't like figure skating.)  Overall, quite edible, much better than the Double Dave's and Gatti's Pizza that locals told me to try.  They did not let me down with the BBQ and Mexican leads (necessary sidebar trips to appease the wife), but these friendly folks clearly do not know quality pizza.

After the mind-blowing trip to Home Slice posted above, that's all I could think about (and talk about, as my wife will attest.)  That changed my plans - it was to be a Home Slice, Rounders and Saccones finish to my long pizza weekend.  Instead it was Home Slice, Rounders, Home Slice, Home Slice and Home Slice (yes, I had it twice in the same day!)  Not since il Forno in Bethesda, MD in 2003, or I guess Gino's East in 2005 have I passed up the shot at a new pizzeria just to have a phenomenal pie for lunch and dinner.  So, I missed out on Saccone's, unfortunately.  For me, a sauce freak, Home Slice was as good as it gets.  I ordered the Pep Mush with extra sauce 3 times and Pep Mush with regular sauce once (they don't offer ham).  All just lovely, the extra sauce got the nod for me.  I could live off that sauce alone I think.  Great cheese too...the real whole milk moz deal I think, a touch of Prov maybe, and a dusting of some hard cheese if I had to guess.  Killer crust - crisp, crunchy bottom, soft, chewy, moist inside...had a wondefully soft, oil-free, lovely, aged taste.  Dang I'm hungry.  I've given 4 pies a perfect '10' out of the 800 or so different pizzerias that I've tried.  This was one.  I also really, really enjoyed Rounders, gave it a 9, but there's a reason I went back to Home Slice again and again!  Had a couple good chats with the friendly, alternative-type college cooks and waitresses about their sauce, I'll post on that in the ingredients section I think.  Also had a few other random stops on my Texas trip, nothing else got better than a 5/10.

thanks to all for the tips on what to try!

I'm glad you enjoyed Home Slice. They RAWK!

Rounders has some killer Garlic Knots (better than Home Slice's knots)... at least they used to. I haven't gone there in awhile.

Next time you're in town, you should check out Saccone's. Seriously. It's very good too.
