1 stone + 1 stone = 1 thick stone ?

Hi,

I'm having trouble finding a 1" thick cordierite stone, but I already have a 5/8" one. It does not have feet. So if I stack another 5/8" stone on top of it, will I have something that works like a 1"-thick stone ?

I would say no. Because the contact between the two wouldn't be perfect the heat wouldn't transfer as efficiency. Similar reason you need thermal paste between a heat sink and a computer chip. I'm sure two is probably better than one but not as good as a single mass. I've never actually tried this so I might be wrong.

I think in some ways it will be similar to having a thicker stone and some ways it won't. There will be more mass to retain heat with the extra stone. I wouldn't expect them to conduct heat from one to the other just like a single large stone. The heat transfer may be good enough that it doesn't matter but I couldn't say. They certainly won't act like a thicker stone when it comes to strength. If you bring them up to a temperature that would crack a single stone they are still going to crack.
