Larry, can I carry your luggage or help in any way?  I am willing to re-imburse you for a pupatella or pulincella or whatever they call those dolls.  I already owe you "one" so, don't let me owe you 2.

i can't wait to hear about your trip.  i'm sure you'll have some good stories to tell!  i always thought it would be good to compare the places you've never heard of to the big name spots in Naples.

WOW Larry, thats Great news!! i am also going to Naples and Rome, but ill be there end of may.

i am doing allot of research, but beside all of the tourist places and pizza shops, i would like to go to a mozzarella caseificio, and pizzarium in Rome.

You should let Roberto (Keste) know about your trip, maybe he could schedule something with the association that he is part of.

Lets exchange info!!

Larry, you are swinging by Starita a Materdei, right?  I would think, with the Roberto/Starita connection, tasting the 'original' would be an enlightening experience.

I've been wondering what impact fame has had on places like Da Michele and Sorbillo over the years.  Look at NY style places.  The most famous (Lombardi's, Grimaldi's, DiFaras) are most definitely not the best. If pizzamaking.com had an Italian speaking equivalent, would places like Vesta, Best and Pizzatown be mentioned? I don't think they would. I can't help thinking that we, on the other side of the ocean, might not be getting the entire Neapolitan pizza story. I'm not necessarily saying that Da Michele isn't the best pizzeria in Naples, but I struggle with the idea of a pizzeria selling 1000 pizzas a day being able to put in that much attention to detail with each pie. Go to Da Michele and Sorbillo (obviously), but ask around.  Maybe there's a newer and/or smaller, hungrier place doing something a bit better.

I would definitely go to Da Michele (in Forcella) and I would also try Da Pellone (you may have seen it on Anthony's Bourdain TV show). They are definitely the 2 best options in Napoli. I would stay away from touristic traps as Sorbillo and Starita. If you go in Napoli, you may want to eat where Neapolitan eat.
Don't get me wrong Da Michele is also a touristic place, but it is also one of Neapolitans favorites.
Da Pellone is very interesting. There is always a constant Line, but no tourist, only neapolitan waiting.
And if a neapolitan waits for Pizza it has to be good.

Going to visit rome and naples. . . .

Dear Thezaman, what a splendid news that you are destined to be in Naples soon! I would like to wholeheartedly recommend that you visit "Teatro di San Carlo" in Naples. Founded in 1737, it is the oldest opera house in Italy and all of Europe. Once upon a time, when Naples used to be the music capital of Europe, some of the greatest composers dreamed of performing at the theater. Illustrious composers such Johann Adolph Hasse, J.C. Bach, Joseph Haydn, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Bellini, Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Pietro Mascagni, Umberto Giordano, and many more—they all have graced the theater with their immortal music.

Luckily, the opera season starts there in March, when you arrive there. From 2nd until 11th of March, Niccolò Jommelli's "Don Trastullo" will be performed there. And, from 21th until 31st, Giuseppe Verdi's "I Masnadieri" will be staged. You might surprise yourself if you decide to check out one or both of the operas. You will never know! The tickets, unlike in the U.S., are not expensive. They are priced to encourage people to engage in cultural activities. Two years ago, I enjoyed an opera there for only €10 Euros, and I was seated at the very first row. I wish you a safe and eventful trip.

Sincerely,
Omid

Larry - Starita is supposed to be anything but touristy. I have read it is the one to hit these days. Don't forget to try the fried maccheroni street food as well.

In Rome, Pizzarium and 00100 are on my destination list.

Larry,
I'm not sure if you've already seen his blog but Jason Feirman (www.idreamofpizza.com) made a similar trip last year visiting pizzerias in Naples and Rome (plus the Caputo Mill and a Buffalo dairy in Caserta).
You can read about his trip (13 parts) starting here: http://www.idreamofpizza.com/2011/02/pizza-adventures-in-italy-part-1.html
