Larry - Starita is supposed to be anything but touristy. I have read it is the one to hit these days. Don't forget to try the fried maccheroni street food as well.

In Rome, Pizzarium and 00100 are on my destination list.

John

Have u ever been there?
Starita seats in one of the worst area of Napoli (if u happen to go there don't bring anything else than 20 euro to pay your Dinner) and even being there for many years it's practically almost unknown to most Neapolitan.

It has always been a decent pizzeria, mostly known only to people in his own neighborhood, as it could be the slice joint on your block.

I bet there is more people on this blog that knows of Starita (without ever been there) than people in Napoli.
It's funny but for some strange reason people in the USA think so highly about this place.
The place definitely got more popular in recent years when the owner of Starita started to advertise himself through a so called association of pie makers and reaching a bit of popularity, more outside Napoli and among professionals than in Napoli itself.

Long story short, is a decent pizzeria but definitely not one place to hit if you only have few day in town.

Hi Larry,

The highlight of my "Pizza Trip to Naples" was a visit to Salvo.

They are about 45 minutes outside Naples- by train and a short taxi ride. Well worth it, and the owners (2 brothers) are very helpful.

Checkout their website for exact address.

Kind regards.

But I thought you said it was touristy?

I have never been there, but what I have read about it has been very interesting - including the novel rachetta they make. The author of this article speaks to being the only foreign visitor in the place on the evening he visited:

But I thought you said it was touristy?

I guess you're right I did say that.
Let me try to explain better.
Starita has been for years a local joint only known to people in its own neighborhood.
In the last years he gained popularity IN THE TRADE by advertising himself through the association he works for.
By doing that he became popular outside Napoli and mostly within the industry.
Therefore, today he is becoming a "place to visit" for foreigns and that's why I said touristy.
As mentioned most neapolitan don't even know where Starita is.
In my original post I was trying to propose places that are destination for neapolitan and not for Tourists and foreign bloggers.
I proposed Michele because (even being a touristic place) he is real institution when it comes Neapolitan Pizza.
If you go in Napoli to eat Pizza, you have to go to Da Michele as if you are Catholic and go in Rome you have to go to the Vatican.
Pellone instead is a favorite by locals.
Someone else mentioned Salvo. That is also a fantastic place very well known to neapolitan.

with don antonio's and keste's both having antonio starita as an influence ,the former as a owner .i will for sure include it on my list.i know they will all be in the states during my visit. i still want to sample the pizza to see how the American version compares. da michele seem to uses less expensive items than some. seed oil and only cows milk mozzarella. i am looking forward to the dough mystery, natural starter or yeast.da pellone seems to have good reviews for the pizza, but a lot of negatives for service, pricing, and location.
  Trianon,what about pizzeria trianon?

Got your point in regard to the connection between Starita and its NY mirror, but let me tell u, if u are concerned about Pellone location, I would worry more about Starita.
Pellone (as per Da Michele) is located near the train station. It's not the best area, but at least they are in heavily trafficated location and therefore less likely areas for hambush.
Starita on the other hand, is located in the sewer of Napoli and their street is not heavily trafficated especially at night. If u really want to go I would suggest for you to try to go for lunch.
If u want to play safe, go to Enzo Coccia at la Notizia. He is located in a great area of Napoli and he is the only pizzamaker that has ever been awarded a michelin star ... He is great too ...

Trianon is the favorite place of my childhood in Napoli. With the years, though i found it changed a lot. I dont think it stands to the standard of others. But u can always try being right across the street from Da Michele.

i am not worried about the areas i will use caution. i am really mean  >:(and am 6 feet 8 inches tall and 265 pounds.ask. craig, john c, norma, steve, or scott 123. :-D that is a joke. from what i understand naples can be a scary place.i am just citing reviews about the pizzerias. i can handle poor service, being rushed, and long waits.i am interested in learning what neapolitan ,as well as roman pizza really are. hype, or something so good that i have a wow moment or moments. not expecting to be wowed.i feel i have been exposed to some great pizza over the years. and believe me i will eating a lot of foods other than just pizza.that would be very disrespectful to my family members accompanying me. now when i come home i will probably be at 265 in weight ,but only 5 foot 7 inches in height.

For a non pizza place, check out this place. Located a few doors down from Pizzeria Brandi. The menu varies each day.

Ate roman pizza for second time this week. Not so good! The thicker pizza is good you pay by the weight. The logistics of the pizzerias that served Neapolitan were far from my hotel. They were suggested my members of the Italian pizza forum . Tried to get into one last night . To long of a wait so we did roman style big letdown! Friday Naples 10:00 am looking to go to da Michele Friday night. They are closed Saturday and Sunday according to their web site. Informed my group it is a must visit!!   Free Internet is about up . One more thing the non pizza in Rome in delicious . The bread that is about one inch thick is great it is all mde with 00flour not much color but lite and flavorful. They call that bread pizza.
