Exploring a cave in West Texas last week, we discovered some pictographs that appear to suggest that native American Indians may have invented what we know as the pizza. These cave drawings are most likely Mescalero-Apache or Lipan-Apache and probably date to the late-1700's, perhaps 100+ years before the advent of the modern Italian pizza in the late 1880's. The drawing on the left certainly appears to be a pizza sliced into six pieces while the image on the right looks to be a primitive wood-fired oven of A-frame design.

These stone features are fairly common in the limestone layers out west. Sand, gravel, or a rock gets caught in an indentation and is spun around by water and acts like a drill boring an almost perfectly round hole. They can get very deep. We've found them as deep as 12". Sometimes you find a rock in the bottom that is round and smooth like a marble or an almond from the spinning.

It was spring in the high desert. Normally it is so brown, but last week, all the colors of the rainbow were represented.

Craig,

I don’t know if I missed this thread, but all the pictures are beautiful!  Your sons are lucky to have a father like you that shows them the beauty of nature.  ;D

I wonder if that cave drawing is really something like pizza.

Craig,

You mind thinks almost like mine! (pizza on the brain too much)   :-D  They could have been doing math lessons, or maybe it was some kind of flatbread.    Who knows what those pictures are.  8)
