KAF jumps on the Baking Steel bandwagon
« on: February 05, 2014, 10:00:32 PM »
I just opened up an email advertising King Arthur Flour's picks for pizza essentials and they now offer a 1/4 inch thick 14 by 16 inch Baking Steel with a storage bag for $124.95.

http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/items/king-arthur-baking-steel-and-storage-bag?go=EP140205B4&utm_source=EP140205&utm_medium=email&utm_content=&spMailingID=6091335&spUserID=MTQ0NTc0MjA3MTgS1&spJobID=380418678&spReportId=MzgwNDE4Njc4S0

What a ripoff considering I paid $60 plus tax to a local fabricator for 1/2 inch thick steel that allows me to make a 17 inch pie on my steel.

I am a retired aerospace technology guy... and for that price, my word... what should be offered is an explosively bonded 0.050 layer of 316 stainless steel to a 1/2 inch aluminum plate.  Good heat retention capability, no exposure to cooking on aluminum, and light weight.

Wish I still had my technology connections... might be a product there!  ;D

So far King Arthur Flour, Modernist Cuisine, and Sur La Table have jumped on the Baking Steel bandwagon. Hopefully someone else enters the market soon. At the moment Baking Steel has no reason to improve their customer service, improve their products, or reduce their prices. Dough Joe is trying...

...but it sounds like they're a long ways off. Last I heard they were using dish soap to remove mill scale. :(
