Will unpolished travertine tiles work?

I was at my local home depot looking for the unglazed quarry tiles and came across these travertine tiles 16" x 16" made in Turkey.  I was just wondering if they are safe to cook on and how they are at holding heat.  Has anyone tried them or have any references to articles about them.

Travertine is not safe for food use as it is one of the few porous marble.
