Ronzo, I generally like whiskeys of all kinds, but for me, Scotch is definitely the pinnacle of what can be achieved by the distiller's art (of course that's only my humble opinion).  The Highlands produce my favorite whiskeys, and within the Highlands, Speyside is my favorite region due to the mellow sweetness of the spirits produced.

Brandy is also a favorite of mine, Jon - glad you're enjoying

Interesting. I don't consider myself a Scotch drinker - not because I don't enjoy Scotch, rather because when I do drink Scotch, I prefer the rich, sweet examples such as some from Speyside.

Craig, along the lines of my observations of being a bartender for many years, many years ago, I compared scotch to brandy drinkers. Few are crossovers and like both. You probably like brandy and meet the scotch drinkers in the middle of the whiskies and bourbons and the reverse for scotch drinkers. Myself, a brandy drinker like canadian blend whiskeys, Windor, Seagrams, Crown Royal, light bourbons. Scotch drinkers like the bolder bourbons, irish whiskeys, ryes and such

I started with the Speyside spirits, and perhaps that is why I prefer them.  However, as time has progressed, I've learned to enjoy even the peaty Laphroaig single malts as well.

My wife really enjoys grappa, JtG - I've not developed the palate yet, but am working on it.

Just found out that we missed the opportunity for a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle's in our State's lottery of sorts by one or two people.  Now enjoying a glass of Scotch to drown my sorrows

I was kind of surprised to find out it's hard to get.  It was fairly easy to get 20 year Family Reserve at a shop in town 6-10 years ago.  I knew that it was limited production and that the owner of the shop knew someone in the family and got a decent allocation as a result, but I remember seeing it occasionally at other shops too.  The shop in question has since closed and now I haven't seen it in a couple of years.  The last bottle I saw was $120.  I didn't want to pay that much because I had only paid $80 for the bottles I bought prior to that.  The last bottle I bought was shortly after my son was born.  I would pour myself a glass with some ice to sip before bedtime.  I would take a sip, promptly fall asleep, and end up dumping nearly the whole glass the next morning.  I wasted the whole bottle that way.

I enjoy it every now and then as an aperitivo or digestivo. Last night it was a chance of redemption after 2 mediocre margherita pizzas ;D
