I'd put a coat or two of stone sealer on it, yearly, and that should prevent any moisture from wicking through the stucco.
If you want a permanent solution, maybe a nice decorative tile or mosaic on top of the stucco.
The notion that rain will turn stucco will turn to mud...that might have happened back when they built homes from pure mud, but if that were true, my office building would be devoid of it's exterior, as would most of the houses and buildings that have a stucco finish.
I used river stones as my final waterproofing, and I sealed the grout with sealer, and nary a problem after 6 years of exposure.
