Poly Tarps have a tendency to get small tears in them, allowing water in. I have several that no longer keep water out after only a few years of use. Something to be aware of.

Yes. With the heat and sun here this one is the second one in about 18 months. This of course is a temporary solution ::). Someday when a get some extra time I will build a small enclosure around it.

I'd put a coat or two of stone sealer on it, yearly, and that should prevent any moisture from wicking through the stucco.
If you want a permanent solution, maybe a nice decorative tile or mosaic on top of the stucco.
The notion that rain will turn stucco will turn to mud...that might have happened back when they built homes from pure mud, but if that were true, my office building would be devoid of it's exterior, as would most of the houses and buildings that have a stucco finish.
I used river stones as my final waterproofing, and I sealed the grout with sealer, and nary a problem after 6 years of exposure.

Very nice Perry.
The only issues about stucco I've ever heard is you do not want to use some cheap-o product or cut corners like a builder in my area did a couple years ago...he had DOZENS of homes that were peeling and had to go back and redo them all.  :o
