What a trip! thanks to all of you who helped me pick pizzerias! Unfortunately a few places I really wanted to try had unusual circumstances that prevented me from getting there (phones not working at forcella?) and I ended up hitting a few places that I really didn't plan on because they were picked by friends that needed to meet there. One of the funniest ones was a last minute unscheduled trip to johns to meet DION... like THE dion of 60's pop music fame. That was cool, but the highlights of the visit were definitely meeting John and Scott (I love you guys!) and lunch at Don Antonio with Ron Molinaro (who owns my favorite italian restaurant of all time Il pizzaiolo in pittsburgh). I think Roberto pretty much rolled out everything on the menu for us to try including burrata that was less than an hour old, and a bunch of cocktails made with spirits (and crazy stuff like pollen!) imported from italy. I think I ate more pizza in two days then anyone possibly could have. Here was the order, and the places I hit.
pepe's (new haven on the way to NY)
amano
vesta
john's
grimalde's in hoboken
Co. (jim laheys pizzeria)
ovest (new spinoff of luzzos)
Don Antonio
Modern (new haven on the way back to boston)
I have another baby due in three months, and as I was walking out the door Ron said... See you in three years! Sadly, he is probably right, so I figured I had to just dig in and try every place I could since it will likely be a long time till my next round of NY area pizza tasting. I honestly didn't have a bad pizza anywhere, so I consider this mission a huge success!
