One of the times that I saw Zappa was at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus, Ohio. IMO, the acoustics in Vets Memorial is terrible. I saw several concerts there and the sound was poor at all of them except for Zappa's. In addition to being a great musician, he knew sound and the engineering involved. Yeah, there was a part in the show....as the lame song "Lady" is winding down and they would light off an M-80 on the floor....smoke machine kicks in overdrive and Dennis DeYoung jumps up from his piano an says "all right you lazy mothers, time to get up an dance".....what a gas man...tons o fun!!

I only saw Frank once. IIRC, he had a broken leg and played the show in a wheelchair.

Zappa invented many pieces of sound synthesizers and enhancement equipment including I think the wawa. One of his main gigs was writing music for orchestras that was quite good as well. Considered by many to be a musical genius and contrary to popular belief, DID NOT do drugs. Said he tried it and didn't like the sh1t. Very much an eccentric musical prodigy!!!

Yes, it's amazing that he could have hung out with the Mothers and not done drugs, but I believe it to be true. This is an excellent book about FZ:

He drank a little bit, not much from what I've read, but ciggy butts, those were his downfall and took their toll on him as we know. Tobacco is the biggest contrdiction in the so called war against drugs there is. Sell the crap all over the place but OMG not pot, REFFER MADNESS will get you

That's a blast from the past! I remember watching that when it was first on. Letterman was so much better back then when it was on NBC. I can't stand the show now.
