How to read page 38 of a 90 page thread?
« on: December 04, 2012, 06:42:01 PM »
I have been reading , with great interest, the wiki "A PHILOSOPHY OF PIZZA NAPOLETANISMO! " Every time I want to go back to the page I was on I have to click ie pg 3 then pg 7 then pg 12 etc. Is there a way I can just enter the page # I want to go to in any long post?

There isn't a "enter page" function but something you can do is if you are on a certain page and you have to stop reading you can bookmark that page then when you want to start reading again you can just click on that bookmark.

Mark,

This is a question that has come up before but, to the best of my knowledge, there is no simple and direct way to do what you want to do. However, I think I have figured out a way to do what you want to do but you will have to do a little math. This method is based on the fact that each forum page contains 20 posts.

Using your example of wanting to go from page 38 to page 90 of Omid's thread, you will note on page 38 (http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php/topic,14506.740.html) that there are two numbers at the end of the URL in the address bar (before html). Those numbers are 14506 and 740. The first number is the topic number. The second number is page related. Now, if you want to go from page 38 to page 90, you perform this calculation:

[(90-38) x 20] + 740 = 1780

Once you replace the number 740 in the URL with 1780 and hit Enter, you should end up on page 90.

The above may seem like a lot of work but in many cases it will be a lot faster than clicking two pages at a time, especially where the thread is a long one and the page spread is wide.

To go in reverse, you would do the math in reverse, e.g., going from page 90 to page 38.

Peter, that is a lot of help. What I usually want to do is go to the last page I was reading, the next day. So I will just remember that # and I'm there.
Wonderful!!!!!!!!

Mark,

In your specific case, you would subtract [(90-38) x 20], or 1040, from 1780 and get 740. That number would replace 1780 in the URL. Of course, you can jot the number of the last page you read on a piece of paper and use that number to return to that page. I wanted you (and others) to understand the math.

The founders of our great innernets (Al Gore?!) foresaw this problem and wrote it into the basic protocol of every browser out there.  It is called "bookmark" and you are unlimited in the amount available to you, subject only to your ability to classify and sort.

Tom,

There are some posts that I go to frequently that are stuck in the middle of long threads with hundreds of posts in them. I have memorized the page numbers but it can take a long while to get to them when I want to refer to them. There are too many such posts to bookmark and keep track of so I will perhaps play around with the method I described.
