Scientists: Global Warming Threatens Wheat Crops
« on: December 19, 2012, 07:22:05 PM »
From PMQ and the Daily Beast about pasta, pizza and wheat.

http://www.pmq.com/news/news.php?id=16360   Read link in PMQ news to read the full story if interested.

Quoted from article.

“If humans want to keep eating some of its favorite dishes-including pizza and pasta-they'd better be ready to take aggressive action against global warming, scientists warn".

There are a couple big problems with that theory:

1) Wheat (and corn) crop yields increased steadily though the period of "global warming" (~1975-1997).
2) Global warming stopped 16 years ago.

That article starts with a whopper of a lie (claiming there is a link established between "global warming" and extreme weather - namely storm strength), and it goes down hill from there.

Craig,

Thanks for your thoughts about those articles.  You are more knowledgeable in areas like that than I am.

With billions in grants flowing in every year, they are wasting something ;) and so long as they keep coming up with scares like this, the cash will keep flowing. It doesn't take much imagination to understand why all those "scientists" are working so hard to make this stuff up...

2) Global warming stopped 16 years ago.

The data points between 16 years ago and now are equal.  That doesn't necessarily mean global climate change stopped.  If you look at data back further, like 100 years, there are several instances where the temp went down, but the general trend is up.  Climatologists look at long term trends, not recent.

But I wouldn't be too worried about wheat.  Someone will engineer some variant that will grow in the desert if it will make a profit.

The area in which I currently reside was at one point under a shallow sea for enough years to build up 3000 feet of limestone.  Now it isn't.  Climate changes.

Mankind is a powerful influence upon the world, but mankind is also the most adaptable of all the animals.  We are damaging the Earth, but the Earth does not care.  When the environment changes, we adapt.

The real question for me boils down to this:

The developed countries have reduced the amount of pollution to the point that we have hit diminishing returns.  If you have a real concern about the environment and "climate change" look to the second and third worlds to effect real change that will reduce "carbon footprints" at a relative low cost.

That does not work politically of course, nor does it increase fundraising among the guilt-filled "elite" of the 1st world countries, so it is not the accepted wisdom, although it is common sense.

Damage is a relative thing.  As you mention, it's a matter of adapting (evolving) to accommodate or even benefit from change.  While man may be the most adaptable, the question is whether everything else, like our food sources, is adaptable.

Yep, the general trend for the past 100 years is up and it's very steady. Case closed.  Man was not doing anything between 100 and 50 years ago that the alarmists can blame for warming back then - it's a recovery from the little ice age.

There are three groups of people heavily vested in the idea of global warming: 1) "scientists" who see an endless string of grants, 2) politicians who see an limitless source of power - if you can regulate CO2, you can regulate all aspects of life, and 3) third world countries who see cash from the first world for global warming related "damages."

Global warming is the biggest scam in the history of the world, IMHO.
