I found a can of CENTO tomatoes at Walmart for only 3.48 a can. Usually, I can only find them for around 4.99 a can. Also, in Top Foods, I have seen them sold in a glass jar instead of the can.  Does anyone think that makes a difference in the taste?? Thanks.

Didn't realize that these were grown in the U.S. until after I opened the can. They had a very nice taste, but I noticed that the tomatoes were very round shaped instead of the usual Pear shape that San Marzano Tomatoes are know for. I added some sugar, sea salt, and some dried basil.

Right on the label, but kind of tricky, IMO.

Update on my previous post in this thread.
I have found a wonderful product that I feel needs nothing added to make a GREAT pizza sauce.
I know I am late to the party :( , but better late than never :-D .

I use the Centos too. I've been able to find them the cheapest at Fairway Market - 2 cans/$6.  I add about a teaspoon or less of oregano, salt to taste, 2 tbspn red wine vinegar and 1 tbspn EVOO.  I use the stick blender to purée the whole tomatoes because I don't care for texture of hand crushing them, but its all a matter of preference.  I don't cook my pizza sauce, because I feel it cooks just enough on the pizza.  Mine take 6 minutes in the regular oven.  If I had a WFO, I probably would cook it a little since the pizzas aren't in there long.

I am going to have to try adding Red Wine Vinegar and some EVOO. Do you really notice a difference with the Red Wine Vinegar? Thanks.

I do.  I think it brightens the flavor of the sauce.  But again, personal preference.  I don't think the pizza sauce police will take you away  :-D. Enjoy!

I used to buy Centos at Fairway until I bought a bunch that were improperly labelled. They definitely were not San Marzanos. I've been off the brand since then.

Last time I bought a bunch of tomatoes i got La Valles in a case from a place on Arthur avenue in the Bronx. I can't recall the price per can. It's been a few years. I should go back. Maybe its this place: http://www.teitelbros.com/index.asp

Peter Reinhart's sauce recipe includes red wine vinegar, I tried it once and didn't care for it, to each his own!

Use Cento Tomatoes tonight to make a Margherita pizza.  Added salt and sugar. Loved the taste. I put the fresh basil leaves on the pizza the last two minutes of baking time.

You consistently make the roundest pizza.

Thanks Craig,

The pizza screen should get the credit for that. Unfortunately, I am consistently forgetting to add the swirl of EVOO right before I bake my Margherita Pizza.

Alta Cucina - Stanislaus Foods

i have enjoyed these San Marzano  Style Tomatoes that are grown in CA. I can buy a # 10 can for less than $4.00 a can. That's a lot of tomatoes for the price compared to some of the 28oz can that cost near $5.00 a can.

I did have a learning curve with my Vitamix Machine. Didn't think the quick blend was going to blast that much. I was wearing Tomatoes on my shirt, pants, and face, as well as the mess in the kitchen. LOL

I do my sauce this way too. I use a stick blender to purée the tomato and add dried oregano and salt to taste, then blend again.
