I get green coffee beans from SweetMarias.com and roast my own...

Finishing up consuming about a pound of Ethiopia Illubabor Camp beans right now.

I just ordered an Aeropress to experiment with.

I usually use a Bodum 18oz French Press.

Yup. I run a drum roaster every few days. Also get my beans for Sweet Marias. We really enjoy the the green beans from Sumatra. Brew in Technivorm Moccamaster for a full pot, an Aeropress for a single cup.

What kind of drum roaster are you using?

I guess I qualify. I buy my organic green beans, Ethiopia Natural Harrar, fair trade, from Seven Bridges Cooperative, www.breworganic.com. I have burned thru 4 various roasters over the years and am now happily roasting in a cast iron sauce pan on my camp stove, same one that fires my pizza oven.

And of course, today I drop and shatter the little glass receiving jar for the grounds from my Kitchenaid Pro burr grinder.  Ugh. 

Believe it or not, I use a mesh basket on my Ronco Showtime Rotisserie to roast my beans...  works great!  I think I paid like $35 for it.

I use a thermocouple-type probe inserted inside to keep track of the temperatures.  I get accurate/predictables results.  First crack in the low 400s (usually around 410)... and second crack around 440-445.  Of course most of it's based on sound.

What kind of drum roaster are you using?

I use a "HotTop" drum roaster. I've come up through the ranks with the skillets, popcorn poppers, etc. Nothing comes close to the roasts I get out of this thing. Actually, my palate for coffee is not all that developed, but my wife is able to determine minute nuances and plays around with all kinds of variables - not just the different crack temps, but the amount of time it takes reaching cracking temps, the length of the crack, the interval between cracks, the amount of air flowing through the drum at different points while it's roasting, etc. All these things are tweaked for each bag of beans we get. It makes her very happy which is good enough for me.
