After I put up the soldier course and construct the dome, I have about 4 inches on each side to pack in I will do a 12 - 1 if that sounds right. Now regarding the buttress after putting the insulation I'm going to have about 4 inches of room on each side for insulation because I left the old brick that was there would the brick be enough of a buttress or does a layer Of cement need to over the insulation?

does anyone have any thoughts on using insulating firebrick to make a buttress around the soldier course with a gap of a few inches for some rebar and refractory cement ?
