Mobile WFO operators/Farmer's Market liability insurance?
« on: April 15, 2013, 12:54:31 PM »
For those that have mobile WFO and/or working at farmer's markets, do you mind sharing who you have your liability insurance with?  My state farm agent couldn't get it past the underwriters.  They were afraid since it's only a weekend business that there would be food contamination/sickness issues...

Derrick,

I have liability insurance through a local insurance company for my market stand.  I had to have an inspection from the Dept. of Agriculture of Pa. before I could open.  I also had to go through a food safety course and pass that test.

Derrick,

I could give you my liability insurance companies name, but they are in Pa.  Maybe you might want to search on the web for small business owners liability insurance in your state.  My car insurance and personal property insurance arenít the same company and they didnít offer liability insurance either for my market stand.

Thanks Norma!  Good call on searching for small business insurance... Hopefully I can find someone fairly soon.  Do they do an inspection of equipment or anything?

Many industries have professional associations and they will often have member benefits including contracts with insurance companies.  Not sure if there is a pizza specific one but maybe through a restaurant association

I would check with an independent insurance agency that utilizes many different companies.  My social service agency had one agent, but different carriers for specific insurance policies.

Also, your local Chamber of Commerce  may be able to help.

The only people that did any inspections on my equipment are the food inspectors that make sure your cooling units are within the right temperatures, make sure there are the right amounts of sinks, hot water and so forth.  My liability insurance company never came to market to check any of my stuff.

http://www.farmersmarketinsurenow.com/ this is who our local Farmers Market suggest.

I tried to do the same with State Farm, to cook at a local commercial kitchen.  They went as far as saying that they weren't allowed to insure mobile businesses anymore. The food was going to be prepped for a mobile food business.

Might try this place too... http://www.mobilefoodvendorsinsurance.com/

Thanks cnkymnky!  I'll have to check them out next year... that's a lot cheaper than the insurance I ended up going with!

John,

I ended up using FLIP based on your recommendation as well.  Definitely a very easy process, (a few clicks) and it seems like they insure just about anyone.

I'll try shopping around next year though to see if we can save some money somewhere... ($100 = 20 pizzas less we need to sell to make up for the insurance!)

Thanks!
