This is not Anthony Mangieri's place, right?

Una Pizza Napoletana sold their lease and most of the stuff in their space in NYC to Motorino in 2009 (he sold it on craigslist of all places). They reopened in San Francisco where a pie now costs $22.

For my taste, that pizza has too much char...

I don't know. Three of the four times I've been there, I've had at least one pizza that dark. Still my favorite pie in Manhattan though.

When char falls off onto the plate, it is burned.  I would send that pizza back and tell them to make me a good one or let me make my own.  That is garbage.

cofi, if you can, I suggest changing the title to Motorino. (or maybe Pete can)

Along with the burnt cornice it looks very dry and lifeless.

When you cut through a charred bubble, you're going to get black pieces on the plate. It doesn't necessarily mean the pie is unacceptable. Probably not perfect though.

I've been auditing NYC neapolitan places for a few years now.  Motorino is my second favorite.  If you go at the right times (yes, even around dinner time) it is possible to be seated immediately.  It happens to be in the same location that Una Pizza Napoletana (UPN) was, but is unrelated otherwise.  UPN, Anthony Mangieri, moved to San Francisco to reopen, as mentioned above.

I would say the char on that looks a bit unusual, from the slight upskirt shot shown I'd guess the oven was a bit too hot.  However, Motorino does tend to be drier than other places, like Keste, lacking the wet center that neapolitan places often have.
