Chimney Covers?
« on: May 12, 2013, 07:53:36 AM »
All,

I'm getting the final pieces together so that we can build our FGM 1030C out, and I"m trying to figure out what kind of chimney cover I should get... having no experience, I was hoping some of you might be able to provide some advice?

Here's the pipe I'm picking up:  http://www.menards.com/main/heating-cooling/venting/stainless-steel-double-wall/8-x-36-chimney-pipe/p-1323366.htm

Here's the covers I was considering, based on prelim research:
http://www.lowes.com/pd_271991-85178-JSC8DRC_0__?productId=3583136&Ntt=supervent (This one matches the company, but doesn't have mesh... does that actually prevent creosote buildup?)

http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/203727779?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=203727779&R=203727779#.UY-CNKKG3To
http://www.menards.com/main/heating-cooling/venting/b-vent/8-universal-cap/p-1747011.htm  (just plain cheap)

Or is there something else folks would recommend?  Thanks in advance!

You need to get a cap that is designed for your chimney pipe. It looks like the pipe is Selkirk SuperVent.

It appears that the lowes cap
http://www.lowes.com/pd_271991-85178-JSC8DRC_0__?productId=3583136&Ntt=supervent

and this one at menards
http://www.menards.com/main/heating-cooling/venting/stainless-steel-double-wall/8-s-s-rain-cap-w-o-spark-arrestor/p-1323360.htm

Are the right ones to pick from.

The cap serves to keep out rain and to help stop sparks. Other than that you really just don't want it to get in the way of the draw.

Here is the Selkirk catalog:

I used a metal-fab cap and spark arrester, but I used all metal-fab insulated pipe too:

I'm also looking to purchase a chimney cap for my soon-to-begin FGM 950C project.  I'm planning on Selkirk 8" pipe and Antoine sells the pipe, appropriate adapter, and the matching Selkirk chimney cap.

I'm looking for something a bit more decorative for the cap.  I've seen "shrouds" and other more decorative caps online, but I'm unclear on compatibility.

It seems I have a couple of options.  1) Place a shroud around the Selkirk cap.  2)  Purchase a more decorative cap that is compatible.

As for option 2, is any cap designed for an 8" chimney pipe compatible?

Also, looking for any links to decorative chimney caps or shrouds.

THANKS!
