I tried them tonight on NP (pics will be up tomorrow hopefully). They are without a doubt one of the finest tomatoes I've ever tasted. Deep tomato flavor and color and sweet as candy. I added about 1/2 cup of water to the can (it was too thick for my taste) and you couldn't even tell a difference in the flavor or sweetness. I thought it would be too rich and not acid enough for NP, but it was really good. The whole family liked them. The main comment was "you could taste it more - more tomato flavor." The one thing I don't like at all is the skin bits.

I'll probably stick with the Cento Italian for NP - mainly because of the skin thing, but as far as crushed tomatoes go, the Sclafani are the best I've tasted.
Sounds like they would be a good candidate for your beautiful looking Detroit Style pies; no?

You're right. They probably would be excellent on DS.

I'll have to look a little more closely, but I've never had an issue with skins in Sclafani crushed tomatoes. If there's any in there it's gone unnoticed by me.

^^^ I guess Im not that sensitive about the skins to notice.

Not so much on the finished pie, but big-time rough mouthfeel straight out of the can.

I keep meaning to search for the Scalfani's.

If you go to search be sure to find the right ones,  I tried the CT ones when I first moved here and I did not like them at all.

I use the Cento brand San Marzano whole peeled tomatoes for my pizza.  I add a few things and then I use my immersion blender to purée the tomatoes.  Makes a great pizza sauce.  I use different tomatoes when I make gravy and meatballs :)

Try the Cento "Italian" in the 35 oz can - as good if not better and at less than 1/2 the price.

I know this is an old topic, but I just found the Scalfani crushed tomatoes on amazon for $24.74/case plus free shipping. I just bought some and plan to compare them to 6-in-1 brand.

I also like Sclafani (Don Pepino) Whole Peeled Tomatoes, with a little sea salt and hit them with the immersion blender.  They taste very similar to the San Marzanos but at about $1.50 per can less than the SM.

So which Sclafani whole tomatoes do you use?

I'm looking for a good tomato to make Neapolitan pizza in my new 2stone oven. I've tried several brands of genuine DOP San Marzano tomatoes in the past and they were watery, tasted like the tin can, and not worth the extra money that I spent. So far my favorite tomatoes are 6-in-1, but I want to use plum tomatoes on my Neapolitan pies.

I've already bought the Caputo pizza flour and going to buy some buffalo milk mozzarella.  :)

Steve,

I've only used the tomatoes in your first link.  These are the Sclafani Whole Peeled Tomatoes from Don Pepino B&G Foods Inc from NJ.  I use these when I make NP-ish with just some sea salt and a few pulses from the hand blender.  For NY and Sicilian styles, I use a blend of the Sclafani Whole Peeled and crushed tomatoes with a small amount of crushed garlic, salt, sugar, fresh basil and oregano.

The second and third links are Sclafani from Gus Sclafani and Sons (I believe from CT).  I have not used this brand, but hopefully another member will chime in.

Enjoy!  I look forward to seeing your NP pies from the 2Stone.

Just picked up some 28oz Cento San Marzanos from my local Giant. On sale 4/$5. My Costco is 3/$9. Trying them out tonight.
