Just curious, why are they so good? I have a digital one I spent like $20 on and it has a cord so you can leave it in and it beeps when its done and stuff. Why spend the $75?

It's a Zen kinda thing. Why buy a Chevy when a BMW will get you to the store?
Therma Pen  is spot on the best, long lasting, best customer service, highly regarded company I know of. I personally have bought from them 4-5 x.

I just bought another at the open box sale.  For years, Thermapen was the only game in town for truly instant read.  I noticed in a Chefs Tool catalog that Taylor know offers a thermocouple for $80 and Maverick PT 1 is listed for $100.  Taylor also offers a thermocouple with infrared, but the infra red only goes up to 482 F , so don't know how handy that would be.

Jeff,

If you are like me you have "mistrusted" you thermometer in the past leading to overcooked meat. Expensive meat. These instant read thermometers really do allow you to see the temperature of the probe tip in real time as you are passing it from superficial to deeper layers. There's no lag time whatsoever.

Since getting my thermo-pen I have not overcooked another piece of meat. And I'm not sure its related, but my kids have stopped misbehaving and I think I'm an inch taller also.

John, they are amazing of course. But the real question, yes the burning question, is WHICH COLOR IS FASTER ??? . I know many feel that black is the fastest, but I tell you, my green is so quick I can hardly believe it :o

I love the Thermapen.  I am on my second one - I lost my first in a fire.

It only last a short while, the misbehaving returns!  Mark
