I just came across this on Facebook. I've been professing this theory for years. I was raised on boardwalk style tomato pies growing up in South Jersey. Of course I didn't know there classification, just that they were pizza. As an adult I lived all over the US, and the pizza belt theory became apparent. Sure you could seek out a decent pizza place, but you had to look for it. It isn't a part of the culture everywhere else. There were tons of independents where I grew up, and we always try different places even though we had our favorites. The pizza desert, الربع الخالي, sparked my passion to make my own pizza.
