Beautiful Peel Suggestion
« on: September 09, 2013, 10:18:17 PM »
We are getting closer to having our kitchen remodeled with new cabinets, backsplash, counters, etc.  Our designer has very much figured out that I am obsessed with making pizza in the WFO.

Her backsplash design calls for the option of hanging 2 pizza peels, one on each side of the oven.  It is a semi-permanent decision in that we would have to ensure hooks are placed into the wall when we tile.  So, given that, I am asking if anyone can recommend where we can buy some peels (long handled for the WFO, preferably around 12" wide in case we actually use them!) that go beyond the ordinary with some sort of beautiful woods and finishes.

Walnut cabinets and cherry wood floors.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks a lot,
Mitch

Why not make them or have them custom made?

I am about as unskilled as anyone you can know in woodwork, so that is out of the question.  But, if someone you know can make them, I am game!

If you want to buy nice looking peels for decoration, that's fine, but, for oven use, you really want an unfinished peel, as it tends to grip the flour and makes for an easier launch.

Mitch,

In the past we have had members from time to time who specialized in making custom wood products including peels. A couple who come to mind, even though they never became active on the forum, are Splinters and Acres Away Woodworks. Their websites are as follows:

Splinters: http://www.splinterswoodworks.com/ (see, also, the thread at http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php/topic,7982.MSG68675.HTML#MSG68675)

Acres Away Woodworks: http://www.acresaway.ca/ and http://www.etsy.com/shop/AcresAwayWoodworks (see, also, Reply 8 at http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php/topic,17495.MSG170409.HTML#MSG170409)

No doubt there are others who are in the same line of business and who make custom wood peels, not only for home use but also by pizzerias. But the above should give you an idea as to what you might find.

You should note that Acres Away Woodworks is in Canada.

If I was going to buy an off the rack peel to put on the wall (and maybe use) it would be one like this: #2077 Classic Baker's Peel -w/ 6' handle.  I think it has some character.

If I was going to hang it on the wall, I would want an old worn out one, but that is just me.

Mitch,  try going to Craigslist and posting a WTB in the tools section.  Someone with a bandsaw or a table saw can custom make one for you in very short order.  I make them for friends.  The main issue is that shipping is problematic for a decent size handled peel.
