Best Oregano Ever!
« on: December 20, 2013, 06:22:18 PM »
For those of you that like to top a pizza with, or use this in your sauce....what is your favorite brand?
Also, is that Penzey's pizza spice any good?

The Penzey's Italian Herb mix is good.  I just throw a couple pinches into a 15 oz can of puree mixed with half of a small can of paste along with a pinch of sugar and granulated garlic.  Sauce made.

Works with a bigger can of 6 in 1, too.  I rarely measure anything for sauce.

Try to find a place that sells it in bulk.  Jarred herbs are close to $70/lb in the supermarket and they're like sawdust.  I get organic oregano from one of my local natural food stores.  It's $23/lb and it's pungent with a high oil content.  Buying from a place that sells herbs and spices in bulk allows you to get just what you need so it doesn't get old sitting in your pantry.

Bob,

If you want to try some of the Greek oregano I purchased at Bova I would send you some.

I just bought one of those big box store containers of "Tones" oregano...not too bad but Craig's post reminded me that it is "McCormicks" that I had been using.  >:(

Thank you for the offer Norma, you're very nice.  :chef:
Going to try a local spice shop like jkb suggests.

I use Penzey's and I have been happy with it but last week I was in a small Italian market and I noticed this Oregano, I have not tried it yet but I made some dough today. In a few days when it is ready I'm going to break the seal on this bag.

I have bought some Mexican oregano that was just too "oreganoey".....like those little cellophane 99 cent packs hanging on the rack in the Mexican foods section. It was too "floral"? But I bet it would be great on the right dish.

All dried green herbs should be sold in clear plastic bags.

I thought the Penzey's Pizza Spice was rather bogus, they just take a bunch of cheap crap and slap a fancy name on it. I stick with McCormick or Spice Islands for my oregano.

I order most of my spices from Spice Sage.  Have not had a problem....yet .   :)   But this past summer a friend of mine had seen my herb garden and asked what do I do with all the herbs at the end of the season and I said I till them under.  The next week he came over with his dehydrator and we bagged everything.  Looks like I might be making an investment in one of those things,  It is great tasting some of "my" garden even in the cold of winter!

Thank you again so much for that link Mmmph.....man that Sicilian oregano is the Best!!  Aroma takes me right back to the early70's pizza joints I worked at...WOW.  :)  I believe this is a final missing ingredient that is going to put my thin crust pizzamaking over the top, thanks!  :chef:
Bought a couple other goodies too...my first jar of Calabrian chili's(gotta get that starter activated). The store owner is going to see if he can get Grande cheese.....life is good. 8)

I don't know how bad this place's shipping charges are but if anyone needs a lil help with alternative shipping just PM me.

If I owned a pizzeria, you wouldn't find a dry herb in it.
Not even dried oregano?  I've grown and used it fresh a lot.  Then I dried some, and I was surprised how different it was.  Not necessarily better, but dried definitely does something that fresh can't do (and vice versa obviously).

Yep, I agree. I think oregano is the only herb I'd prefer to use dried. The drying process seems to intensify the flavours.

Have to agree with posters who know fresh and dried oregano both have a place in the kitchen.  But for dried, I have to tell ya'. Buy some "True Greek Oregano" seed, grow your own, then cut at about twelve inches (before it flowers) and dry in your kitchen in a wire colander. Then you'll know what the "best" is all about. Strip off the stem and crumble as needed. Wow!

Cheers

Going to try out this oregano, I haven't been all that happy with McCormick's. This looks and smells the part, we'll see how it tastes.

I tried it today and I didn't like it.

This shop had different three different oregano bags. One labeled Greek, one labeled Mexican and this one. From reading the descriptions online, I'm pretty sure this is Turkish oregano and it sucks on pizza. Since the McCormick's stuff looks identical to greek, I guess the Sicilian is what I want. I'll order some online now.

The fennel seed was great though and will save me money making sausage.
