in the shadows of Mount Vesuvius, isn't that the home turf of "San Marzano" tomatoes? :o

It's a catastrophe. I was there in the fall, garbage is filling the streets as well.

I hope all the San Marzano lovers read this, your favorite tomato my be growing in a cesspool. I'll take home grown California or Jersey tomatoes any day of the week!

I agree, Dave.  Thanks for sharing this information.  It is a sad, shame this is happening.

Although it is not possible to say definitively if SM tomatoes are being tainted, the areas they are referencing as dumping grounds are not near the DOP area where SM are generally grown. The area of dumping is north of Naples. The SM region is southeast on the other side of Vesuvius.

It should also be noted that any canned tomatoes from California or New Jersey are heavily sprayed with chemicals in the field to allow for quick growth and pest resistance.
