Modern Apizza-New Haven

I finally made it to Modern. The gf wanted something other then pizza (I have no idea why!) so instead of going to Pepe's which is my favorite in New Haven we went to Modern since they have other items as well. The line was about a 45 minute wait, and Yale wasn't even in session being Christmas break! We ordered 3 pies: clam with garlic and bacon, sausage with mushroom and cheese, and bacon and cheese, which is my favorite. The clam wasn't awful, but it certainly wasn't anything close to Pepe's, the sausage and mushroom was pleasant, I enjoyed it. They completely forgot my bacon pie which was a huge disappointment to me. Overall the experience was mediocre. I realize there are people who actually think Modern is better then Pepe's: not to these tastebuds. At least I made up for it by hitting Libby's for some ice. The line for Pepe's was much longer then Modern and after prime eating time.

I brought some friends to modern A april 2006 for lunch on our way home from NYC. as I knew that pepes and sallys were closed during the day.  6 people ALL very dissapointed.  The gum line that tom L refers to was the worst I'd ever seen.  It still comes up from time to time.  Too bad.  -marc

I've been disappointed by all New Haven pizza joints.  There's no doubt that they are the best in Connecticut.  But the people that call them the best in the country probably haven't even been to the best places in NYC.

That's why I say New Haven and NY Pizzas shouldn't be grouped together. They are different styles and have different followings.
