idy shelf life
« on: April 14, 2006, 09:43:01 PM »
I saw someone's post on their IDY going bad and it got me thinking that maybe all my bad experience with yeast in the past was that it had died...usually, the first couple weeks with the new yeast were fine...then it was downhill.  Ofcourse, I store my IDY in the refridgerator.

I haven't had any problems with my dough recently, although it seems that I am not getting the "rise" I once was.

So, my question: about how long will IDY last in my refridgerator, after the seal has been broken from the original container?

ihavezippers,

I might add that I am just now in the process of finishing up a one-pound bag of SAF Red instant dry yeast (IDY) after several years (I'm guessing over five years). I have always kept the yeast in the freezer, and don't ever recall a dough failure attributable to it.
