Could it be that people, over the course of the years, came to reject something that tasted like red paint smeared over wet newspapers and topped with orange glue?
Things have never been more like today than they are right now.

This is not my opinion, but saw this article in the New York Times.

I think the way they just let their pizza sit out all day is gross too.

[

I have eaten many a slice at airports over the decades and have found it “adequate”.  I think some posters are judging it too harshly for what it is trying to be.

I have also noticed that the number of restaurants in my local mall food court has shrunk over the last few years.

I agree - growing up in California I've eaten many a slice from Mall food courts. "Adequate" sums it up - at least the pies that I had back then.

We have a fairly big mall in Lancaster.  If the drop down feature is used at the below link it can be seen that Park City food court does still have a Sbarros listed, but I know it is not there anymore.  http://www.parkcitycenter.com/dining-entertainment   Park City Mall has been in operation for many years and I have seen different pizza businesses come and go.  Infinito's is right next to Park City Mall.  I think Park City Mall opened in the early 70's.

high mall rent, fierce competition from numerous other mall options including food courts and restaurants, mediocre product, gee, what's the big surprise? ???

Yep, is Sbarro vs Tender Greens really even debatable?

i have eaten at sbarro a few times in my life, and it has never been the same, whether it's different days or different stores. it's like they eyeball the dough, and use whatever sauce/paste/tomato 'product'

and on the contrary to LC's 'fresh tomato sauce', it's made from bags of paste, mixed with seasoning packets, hydrated with water. but so much better than sbarro red glue sauce

Sbarro is coming out of bankruptcy again:

http://www.moneynews.com/Economy/bankruptcy-recession-restaurant-fast-food/2014/05/19/id/572133/

From the article, it looks like several other retail food businesses have also had their share of problems that forced them into bankruptcy.

I find Sbarro's slices not awful, which is more than I can say for some other chains.  That said, they're decidedly unremarkable, and a bit pricey for what you get.

I think they've survived on 'being there'.  A pizza option in the food court.  But if 'being there is half the battle', then it looks like that part of the battle is getting more difficult.

A mall near me recently opened a food court featuring Chipotle, Elevation Burger, Freshii, ban, and more to come.  I don't think a Sbarro will ever fit in.

Time to compete guys.

Always wondered how sbarro would do as a stand alone place.  They charge way too much for a slice in those high rent malls.
