Naples report
« on: June 03, 2014, 03:28:22 PM »
We finished our 2-week Mediterranean vacation yesterday.  5 days in Rome and then a 10-night cruise to Italy, Greece, and Turkey.

This past Sunday we were in Naples.  My wife and I walked for 7 hours and ate our way through the city.  Sadly, many popular places were closed (i.e. da Michele, Ciro Salvo, etc.)... but we had lunch at Lombardi 1892.

The pizza was excellent and actually made me impressed with my own efforts (thanks to all the info on this site).  My wife and I both consumed a Margherita pizza.

We also had sfogliatelle and baba cakes at Gran Caffe Gambrinus in the morning.  Yummy.

We walked up via Toledo and I had a pull of espress at Bar Mexico... awesome!

After touring the Archeological museum, we hit Lombardi 1892 for our margherita pizzas.

A little bit of photo taking and some shopping we and stopped for some street pizza and frittatone at a little stand called Friggi Friggi...

More walking and shopping and some gelato on Via Toledo

We had intended to stop at Pizzeria Brandi in the later afternoon, but were too full from the early eating adventures.

Yes, you are right. The issue was that it was too far to walk.  It wouldn't have mattered, we were too full. LOL

Another outcome is that my pizza eating experience at Lombardi 1892 shows that the Neo-style I am creating on the blackstone (Using TXCraig's method for dough).. is about 90-95% of the way to being really authentic tasting!

Thanks for the tour. Pics were great, and that pie looked wonderful. Since you only had one day and one tummy, you will have to go back for seconds!

Great tour Qarl. The pizza at Lombardi looks delicious.  I've read so many negative reviews on the pizza in Naples, it's nice to see that some pizza places are making good pizza.  It's also nice to know that you can bake a pizza in the Blackstone that tastes pretty close to what you can buy in a good Naples pizzeria.  And the pastry looks really great too!  Makes me want to visit Italia!

And what about Rome? Did you have a chance to visit Pizzarium?  Seems like you can get delicious pizza just about anywhere in Rome.  So many great little bakeries selling pizza al taglio.

Did you use a Rick Steves' book, by chance?   :P
My girl and I hit the same spots - got the Sfogliatelle, bar Mexico, walked via Toledo...
