5 second search delay
« on: June 30, 2014, 04:24:55 PM »
Now that one has to have an intro post to search, can someone please turn off the 5-second search timer? It's highly annoying.

When I use the search feature, and it doesn't return any results, if I make a quick change and hit search again, I get this:
Pizza is not bread.

Pretty common on most forum software. It prevents server overload.

I have a VERY active forum I participate in.  They have a 30 second delay (due to high level of activity and searches).

5 seconds is a breeze.

If this forum can't handle the volume of searches it gets without a delay, it might be time to upgrade the hamster.

That would be the Time required between searches from same user setting. 5 seconds does seem a little high. Perhaps 1 to 2 seconds would be a better balance of convenience and protection.

If you want a faster hamster, you might want to feed the kitty.

I think this goes along the same lines as the reason we weren't able to upload images greater than a certain resolution previously.

All these things require a faster more robust server that costs $$$$$.

As far as I know, this place is FREE.  So we shouldn't complain that much.

Do you really think removing that delay would change the server load one iota?

Yes this place is free, and all of the content offered here was given to this place for free. You tell me which is more valuable.

Successful businesses tend to have things in common, and one of those things is not subjecting your customers to unnecessary annoyances.

It costs me $300/month in hosting fees for the dedicated server that runs this forum.  ;)

I found the setting and removed the 5 second delay for consecutive searches. Enjoy!

I agree. But this forum isn't here to make money, it's here as a public resource. Memberships and GoogleAds help make it self-sustaining.

Have we, as a society, become so insatiable and in need of instant gratification that a mere 5 seconds of wait has become excessive and unacceptable?  Wow!  Just WOW!!!!

And to think, our ancestors had to go to the library and learn from a book.  And our great-great-great grandparents actually had to wait and learn cooking techniques passed on from a friend or relative or teacher.  Heathens, they must have been!!!!

Making a suggestion that improves the user experience at zero cost is something you see a need to ridicule?

I'll give you the benefit of that doubt that you were really drunk when you composed that post.

I understand and appreciate what Karl has said but as a very heavy user of the forum's search features, I am for anything that makes that task easier. In that vein, I, too, have found the five second delay annoying. And I consider myself to be a very patient person. If Craig is also finding the delay annoying, that can only mean that he is doing a lot of searches. I have also noticed recently that Craig has been going beyond the call of duty by helping other members with citations to posts and threads that address their concerns. Norma used to do the same thing, and that was long before she became a Moderator. I don't quite know how she does it, but she seems to remember everything she has ever done on this forum and to be able to cite all of the relevant posts and threads. She has been burning up the search function.

I'd also like to thank Paul (parallei) for his help along the same lines. Members like Paul make this forum a better place.

Qarl-I am one of those ancestors that actually grew up where you went to the library and read/checked out books!  When I went to law school, we did all the research in the law library as students researching in books!  I was already practicing several years when the internet was "born."

Steve-I didn't know there were sustaining members, but after your post, I went looking, found out there were and signed up.  Great forum, I am learning a lot here.
