Yeah, but instead of ignoring it, you chose to highlight it and pollute the thread with pointless banter (don't bother pointing out that I'm continuing it ;)).

I ignored the other 9,500. That's got to count for something.  :-D

I suppose a leaf or two of fresh basil wouldn't be so bad.  I'm picking a few fresh leaves and adding them to the plain tomatoes.  I can't say that I've ever tried a can with basil leaf in it.  Some cans just say basil, which could be anything.  I find a big difference between fresh basil and the dried stuff.

I don't think I've ever tried (or even seen for that matter) a can of DOP SM's that didn't have leaf basil. I'm sure they are out there, but not around here.

Apparently they are out there.  I've never tried these.  The description says Tomatoes and citric acid.  I've tried their crushed SMs which are not DOP, and they are tomatoes only.  Their diced product also has no basil.  Their other whole, non dop products do contain basil leaf.
Rosafoods is a philly based company.  I've only the crushed SMs in one store.  I have no idea where to get their products, except by ordering online.
btw- the crushed SMs where $1.99 in store.  The clone SMs have added salt, and I think they taste better out of the can, but they are nearly twice the price.  I would use the Rosa crushed SMs for everything if I could source them locally.

I don't think a basil leaf is common in anything other than whole peeled. Actually I'd be a bit surprised if such a produce even exists.

I remember learning about this. It had to do with the way the government was taxing produce compared to the tax on sauces. Tomato companies would add a leaf of basil to the can to make it sauce instead of produce and thereby have a lower cost (same thing Canadians were doing to get cheese from the US). At first pizzerias and other places were upset about the addition of basil to tomatoes, but once the loophole was closed and they tried to remove the basil it couldn't be undone. So now they still come with a leaf of basil in it for this reason.

I have no links to a source for this. However the person I got this info from is fairly reputable.

I'm glad I reread this because i missed your post Jefferey.  Very interesting. Until I read this I thought there was a real reason - like when you pickling you add a grape leaf to get the tannins to protect from spoilage. (at least that's what I read and why I did it - it seemed to work)  It reminds me of when I was a customhouse import broker - the way goods we're classified to get around tariffs were similarly sketchy. Add a rubber ball and an IC becomes a "toy" with a lower duty percentage.  Thanks for sharing that.
I have done wrong.. but what I did, I thought needed to be done.

I was just commenting on whole leaves - not basil in general. I would be surprised if any product other than whole peeled contained whole leaves.

kay...sorry.I`m sure you have a hypothesis and imagine it has to do with processing methods.
I1m not a huge fan of leaves in my canned toms.

Pull them out. They have no use once the can is opened.

For me, the flavor is not there without them in the canning process.

Craig,

Yes, 3" whole leaves.  When I open a can I can show you the whole leaves if you want to see them.

I believe you. I would not have guessed they would have put whole leaves in a ready-to-use product.

Craig,

You might want to look Zing's post at Reply 1785 http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php?topic=3940.msg196718#msg196718 and Peter's post at Reply 1786 http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php?topic=3940.msg196725#msg196725 It also looks like Full Red Pizza sauce can be purchased with basil by Peter's post at Reply 3 http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php?topic=25042.msg252748#msg252748

I can't find Peter's post right now, but I think he posted somewhere here on the forum there are employees at Stanislaus that are hired just to pick fresh basil for some of their tomato products.

Maybe one more thing for you to learn today.   :-D  >:D

I just found a post where I had tried Full-Red Pizza Sauce with Basil at Reply 720 https://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php?topic=21559.msg227404#msg227404  It can be seen what basil leaves I found in that sauce.

I have this can of Stanislaus Alta Cucina Whole Peeled Plum Tomatoes with basil at home which I did not try yet.

Peter,

That is a very good post by you.  I am still searching for the post by you where you told of how employees picked the fresh basil by hand for some of the Stanislaus tomato products.  I am probably using the wrong words in an advanced search.

I can only wish the math side of my brain was a good as my memory.   :-D
