https vs. http in YouTube Videos
« on: July 29, 2014, 09:07:13 AM »
I realize that threads on the Forum Info board are not read by many members or guests but since hope springs eternal, I persist anyway by trying to better inform them of features on the forum.

Today's topic has to do with the way that videos, such as YouTube videos, are treated in posts. One of the features that Steve, the owner and Administrator of this forum, has tried to introduce on the forum is the embedding of videos in the posts so that the reader can see the opening scene of a given video rather than just a link. Such a link is typically an https link. Using one of Johnny the Gent's recent examples, such a link might look like this:

What many members do not know is that if they simply delete the "s" in https links, the videos will be embedded in their posts, as shown below. In doing this, it is a good idea to put a modified link (the https link without the "s") on a separate line with space above and below the line and, if warranted, to build the text around that line. Deleting the "s" in the above example, the video looks like this:

For some while, I have been fixing the https video links in members' posts, as I believe Steve has also been doing, and maybe other Moderators as well, but this is something that members can do themselves in composing their posts. I believe that the same method will apply to other video sources such as Vimeo videos but I am not absolutely sure of that or whether the above method will work in all cases. But it is simple enough to test by using the Preview feature.

Is this a limitation of the forum software to not auto embed?  Is there a config file that you can simply modify to include https links also?

It's a limitation of the mod used to embed videos. It looks like there's a simple workaround:

I believe the original intent was to have videos embed automatically. However, it doesn't look like that happens all of the time.

Steve is an IT guy and he usually looks at threads on this board, so he may be able to answer the questions better than I.
