apizza,
The pizzerias mentioned in the article are the same ones mentioned in the Pollack-Ruby book but in a different order. When I read the book shortly after its publication I couldn't find the criteria for the pizzerias selected, as I noted in my review of the book at
http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php/topic,1957.msg18205.html#msg18205
. As noted in the review, I had spoken to Penny Pollack just prior to publication of the book and tried to get her to visit our forum, which at the time didn't seem to interest her. I was most surprised to find that our forum did make it into the Pollack-Ruby book, apparently as an afterthought.

Wells Bros. is really really excellent. I can eat a large sausage and garlic pizza from there by myself

My money goes to Modern Apizza in New Haven. Better than Sally's and Frank Pepe's!
While you're in town grab the best burger around at Louis' Lunch. I swear--it lives up to the hype!
