Gelio's Pizza Royal Oak, MI
« on: April 12, 2006, 09:54:24 PM »
Does anyone remember Gelio's Pizza (possibly Gilio's) on Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak, Michigan?  I believe they went out of business at least a couple of decades ago.  My father said they had a uniquely memorable flavor, and that he knew many others who agreed.  Unfortunately, he was short on adjectives in describing their pizza.  Still, any pizza you can remember for 30+ years must have some extraordinary qualities.  Any thoughts, reminiscencs, or recipe suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's been almost 30 years since I left Detroit (I live in NYC, now).  Never heard of Geliio's, but your mention of Woodward Ave. brought back fond memories of Ted's on the Park (usually at 2:00 a.m.).  I was sad to learn that they're no longer there.

As far as pizza goes, the place I miss most is Buddy's, on McNichols (6 Mile Road).  Definitely give it a try if you've never been there and like deep-dish:  http://www.buddyspizza.com

You are lucky to live in NYC for the food alone.

ALAS, I now live in South Carolina.
