Sanfratello's
« on: April 15, 2014, 10:28:47 AM »
Sanfratello's in Glenwood, IL recently closed its doors after 45 years in business. Their website says "closed for remodeling" but there's more to the story and I've attached a link which contains more information. I'm sorry to see this happen not only because they make some of my very favorite thin crust, having been a customer for over thirty years, as a bonus it's only about two miles away. I love their sweet sauce, more so than the other local pizza icon, the flagship Aurelio's in Homewood, which is right here in town but has become very expensive and inconsistent in my experience.

Gregg:

A good buddy of mine sent this to me a few days ago.  The article is kind of thin on details, unfortunately.  Every time I've been there, that place is packed, so there must be a lot more to the story.  Mismanagement of funds or something.  This isn't a Little Caesars or other pizza slophouse: it's the real deal--and the prices to match.

Fortunately, they have other locations, so the recipe lives on.  But it is still a damn shame.

I wish I lived in the Region or visited enough to make a real run at cloning some of these pies.  It's much harder working from memory and being five states away.

Cheers,
Garvey

Seems like they now have around 2 or 3 other locations:

I've thoroughly enjoyed their pizzas when I was living in the south suburbs of Chicago.   But the Glenwood, Illinois location's fan base had changed alot necessitating locating branches elsewheres.  Hopefully they return to Glenwood soon.    --BTB

They're opening a location in Phoenix, and in the article about it, they said that they use Scamorza, FWIW.

I have been to the Gilbert location twice now. First time was so-so, on par with the Indiana places. The last time we ate at the Highland location we didn't eat the leftovers. The second time it was just as good as the Glenwood location. We left the Chicago area back in Aug.

I have been going to Sanfratello's since it was the one house. for awhile it was at least once a week or more. I heard they opened in AZ in JAnuary and my anniversary was the 26th. My plan was to take my wife and surprise her. Our first date was at Sanfratello's some 30 years ago. A few days before I find it is basically carryout. I went from hitting the mother load of points with the wife to what would have been eating in the car. And trust me it wouldn't have been the back seat either.  :-D We went out for seafood instead.

I hear they had to add a second oven because they couldn't keep up. And Joe came out to help with the install.

Nice field report, KTM Guy.  Are sit-down pizza places more of a Chicago thing?  You go to Sanfratellos, Aurelios, Home Run Inn, etc., at lunchtime on a Tuesday, and there are 150 people in there.  Down South, anyway, the sit-down pizza parlors are fewer and farther between.
