I actually thought (or was hoping) that these were fibrament to begin with.  They are the only stones I have found so far that has repeatedly held up to 800+ degree temps with no issues.

to begin with the theory was to keep the thickness down so there was less ramp up
time. But since the bottom stone takes the brunt of the heat, it needs to have more mass
so they both meet at the same place at the same time.
