Is it OK to buy a dough ball from a pizza place?
« on: March 22, 2008, 06:20:52 PM »
I sheepishly did this today as we decided last minute to invite over some people and not proud of my 2 hour doughs.  They charged me $3.50 and I was not going to complain knowing the price for 50# of flour. I figure the price for a dough ball is about 50 cents or so.

I occasionally buy dough balls from pizza restaurants around North Carolina. I like comparing their texture and taste to my homemade dough.  The last two, Mellow Mushroom and Pie Works charged $3.50 each.

sounds right to me:

$.50 for ingredients
$.50 for labor
$.50 for overhead
$1.00 for profit

and

$1.00 for you being a PITA  :D

seriously though, $3.50 sounds very fair to me if its good dough.

cheers

I was in a Whole Foods store last week and noticed they had dough balls for sale in the refrigerated bakery section, so I thought I'd try one out.  They cost $2.49.  Make a pretty good pizza crust, too.  :chef:
Let them eat pizza.

Of course it's OK!!!  I must admit, I use dough balls quite a bit if I am in the mood for pizza, but really don't want to take the time to make dough (which I am still working on doing well anyway...)   And some places have really good dough, so why not use it!

BTW asheborobluecomets, Mellow Mushroom does make suprisingly good dough.  I bought some balls from there after trying their pizza (I was in Asheville for a few weeks for a friends wedding)
